Sometimes it can be difficult to know when your use of alcohol or drugs has stopped being just an enjoyable activity and has started making trouble in your life. A substance use assessment (also known as an alcohol and drug assessment or evaluation) is typically a one session meeting with a professional with expertise in alcohol and drug use disorders. During this meeting, the professional will ask you questions about your personal history with alcohol and drugs, and will ask you questions about other areas of your life, such as your legal history, educational and employment history, mental health history, and family. The professional may also obtain information by having you fill out forms on paper or on the computer. Sometimes, the assessment will include a drug screen. The professional will use this information to determine where the substance-related challenges are for you, and will provide you with recommendations for interventions that may help. If you were referred for the evaluation by a third party, such as an attorney, the court, or a probation officer, a written report can be provided and sent to the third party, with your permission, on your behalf.
